UNESCO is the UN specialized agency with a specific mandate to promote freedom of expression and the diversity of cultural expressions. The organization values the role of media in enabling democratic governance, intercultural dialogue, development and poverty reduction. It places special recognition on the specific use of media platforms and institutions for the purpose of public-interest journalism.

UNESCO is uniquely placed for the implementation of Support to Media in Jordan project, working with professional media organizations, civil society actors and national authorities. UNESCO has the ability and credibility to assemble diverse stakeholders to discuss press freedom and media development in Jordan based on best practices and references such as its internationally recognized Media Development Indicators (MDI), which are also assessed for Jordan under this Project. UNESCO is a neutral and impartial partner with a global advocacy role and in-house expertise to promote the right to freedom of expression, press freedom, professionalism and independence on all media platforms.
